“Don’t talk about pay. It’s grounds for termination!”

As the title says my work made it known today that talking about your compensation with other employees is a termination offense. It all started because my coworker and I shared our pay sheets with each other. Come to find out I get paid almost double than he does. This wouldn’t be an issue other than the fact we both get paid on the same financial statement lines. He became pissed (rightfully so) and talked to his boss. Now we had a big meeting where we were told talking about our pay with other employees is grounds for termination. This can’t be legal, right?
