I'm watching the BBC program/series “The Village”. The bosses are much like today's CEOs and managers; cruel, unhelpful people. I don't know; didn't turn of the century villages know everyone? How could you leave a family to starve? How could you just threaten a man's family? I've been in a few villages and people know each other going back generations. Especially at the turn of the century.
I think the managers and owners in the movie are so over-hyped and cruel because it makes people think to themselves, “well, thank god, I live in a modern era.” But many of us work and don't get the things we need for a balanced, happy life. Can anyone support me on this? Like any happy tales from villages and survival? One of my great-great aunts or cousin mentioned finding a nice warm cow-patty to stand in (as a child). This was 1880s Germany. They would've helped each other out with bad harvests, loss of a cow, injury, right?
Long story short, I think the village would've been kind and helpful to each other. As I mentioned, I think the shitty people in those dramas didn't exist so much back then. It portrays old-time people as shitty people but I think what we see in these dramas nowadays are making people think “I have it much better then.” I mean, compare it to James Hewitt or something like that. I know dramas gotta be dramatic, but we can stop thinking “Well we have it so much better now” but in the US we don't have (by and large) good workplaces and rights like other first world counties.
