I'm still fuming while typing this.
For context, I'm from Europe and I recently graduated from college, although a little late because I re-took my studies in hand when I was 29.
I recently saw a job offer from a private languages school in my city, and I sent my application because you never know.
A little surprised because I have a simple degree and no work experience in formal education, I received their call and went for an interview.
I took my time to be fresh and nice, drove 30 minutes (not too much IF you don't waste that time) to their office and started the interview.
The recruiter mentioned that she read I'm also a sports trainer in the evening hours, and I confirmed-I've been teaching my sport for 7-8 years by now and I teach every day, ehm evening.
She immediately replied, “That doesnt work with us”.
But, why? Long story short, they are offering a 10 (TEN) hours per week job, starting from 4-4.30pm, from monday to saturday, so I could cover not only ten hours, but something like 12-14 per week no problem, and only because they are closed in the morning, or I could have covered every morning too.
No, this didnt sound good for the recruiter. She said that you never know when you'll actually finish your shift, but I did the simple maths behind this and I really saw no problem: 10 hours per week/5-6 days means two hours top everyday. An extremely light schedule that could very well match with evening hours at the gym, because if I start at 4.30pm I could end my shift early enough to go straight to the sports centre.
“Your activity contrasts with our organisation.”
Very well. THEY called me, THEY read my resume, THEY made me dress nicely and waste my time to say I'm not a good match for them in FIVE minutes.
What the hell? And all of this to offer me a position that would surely pay less than fewer hours teaching sports.
I know that work is more important, but what the hell. I offered to adjust my hours, to make compromises, to be there every saturday.. no.
Well now I hope they won't find anyone for their stupid job
Edit: I meant the opportunity of the year for me, not them.
