Employer saids that I must sign off for my “unexcused absence” even though I turned in a doctor’s note

I was out of work due to having lock jaw. I was off 27th,28th,31st of July and the 1st of August both covered by 2 doctor's notes. My employer said due to being out of sick time off the days I called off where unexcused. Now I must sign off for the added points onto my employer attendance point system thing (it was 1 now going up to 3 and 6 is termination). I live in Southern California and this must be illegal but I can only find one law that says it protects you (the FMLA) but I don't think it applies to me. Anyone know what I can do before talking to HR about this shit?
