Feeling young & dumb

Long story short, I left my first ‘serious’ job after almost two years last May. Didn’t hear from them until mid-January when they sent me a 1099 form. Being clueless I waited and had my tax aide explain it better to me. I obviously had learned it’s very odd to file a 1099 at the age of 21. So I was of course fined for it and my employer had coded it as if I directly asked for my 401k early (which had a solid $300 in it) My 1099 form only says I received $145 But then it gets more complicated, I realize I was never sent a check. So I call my old employers benefits holder and they say my check was sent last August and deposited September. Although my bank statements say otherwise. But then it gets more complicated, I realize I was never sent a check. So I call my old employers benefits holder and they say my check was sent last August and deposited September. Although my bank statements say otherwise. I’ve called Empower and have asked for three separate confirmation requests showing this supposed deposit. I haven’t received anything through mail, text, or email.

I’m getting to the point where I’m starting to wonder if I’m wasting my time and they’re trying to rip me off. I know this all seems silly on my end and $200 may seem like $2 to many but that money could REALLY help me and I’ve already paid taxes over it, so might as well get my effin money. My parents are fairly poor and notorious for making bad financial decisions, they didn’t even know what a 1099 was either. I’m just a little lost and feeling like I was raised to fail and lose out on money just like my parents did over the years. Do I need to contact IRS or EBSA? Call it a loss? Luckily my new job pays tremendously better so I’ll be able to save up a lot more for my new 401k.
