Over the last 6 months, I have been working as a General Manager for $20k/year under market pay average. When my old GM left, the owners told me I was next in line, and they wanted to “see what I could do” before they promoted me. I worked my ASS off for them, working 55-70 hours per week, not taking any vacation days, and working as the ONLY manager in a busy premium dining restaurant. I was doing all of the GM work (inventory, scheduling, invoicing, work orders, ordering, etc) and I was getting absolutely NO Thanks for the work I was doing.
My staff started coming to me about the level of disrespect coming from the owners of the business (we are a franchised location) and so I went to corporate and explained everything and was basically told “You are their employees, not ours” and that there was nothing they could do. They would swear at employees. Yell at them in front of guests. They had ZERO customer confrontation skills and had ZERO idea how ti effectively run a business.
They also decided that they should start to receive manager tipout, changing the tipout for myself and the chef from ~$1000 monthly to under $500 monthly. (For doing little to no work and barely running the floor when they are there alone – they have been caught sleeping in their cars while on shift and drinking in the office)
Since sending in my resignation, the owners have told me not to come back, and about 5-7 of my FOH staff have quit or put in notice and everyone in the kitchen is looking for new work.
So here is my resignation letter:
—————————
Hi there,
I regret to inform you that this email will serve as my official two weeks notice, with my last day of work being Sunday August 27.
I have been offered a position that will significantly advance my career, and I feel like I’m at a standstill in this position and at this location.
The way that you have treated, and continue to treat, myself and staff with utter disrespect has led me to this decision. I have been taken advantage of throughout my time here, and I am worth more than a Bar Manager title doing a General Manager job.
I hope that you take this as a sign to start treating your staff with the respect that they deserve, or staff will continue to leave due to the way that they are treated.
Thank you,
