Fired the day I was hired?

I recently got my B.S. is physics, and have decided to try and join one of those “upper echelon” tutoring companies. I've got 10 years of tutoring experience under my belt and I really love doing it! I found a place on Indeed that payed a whopping $40 an hour, and they accepted my application! After talking directly with the CEO, he said I'd be a great fit for the position. I turned down a few other offers before attending the “onboarding” training. (Which i was told id be paid for) During that training, I learned about the company's policies, which were pretty standard. I asked casually, “how much do you actually charge your clients?” As I figured that would be something worth knowing. The trainer dodged the question, which I thought was odd. A few hours later I get a call from the CEO again, telling me he thinks…

A few hours later I get a call from the CEO again, telling me he thinks I'm a “spy” and not to ask about “company secrets”. He told me they'd be “going with a different candidate”.

What the hell just happened? Is the margin for profit so absurdly high that he's afraid ill call him out? Do other people work in places where the clients price is an absolute mystery?

Shit.
