Silly me for thinking the company I worked for 2 years and moved across the country for might give me a card or condolences when I had to put my cat down.
It was bad timing for them so I was fired instead. When I told my boss about the emergency, they said I had a decision to make…as if there was an alternative to helping my suffering cat.
My buddy was only 8 years old and his symptoms were terrifying. He moved across the country with me, got me through so much out here alone, and my ESA. I don’t have children or a partner, and was dedicating a lot of my time to growing with this company.
I have only had high performance remarks, and just accepted a promotion weeks before this happened. It felt personal, and spiteful; acted like I wasn’t taking my promotion seriously because I had an emergency.
Not only did I have the PTO, but it was approved and applied. The company has also just increased our PTO as a whole because they want better “work life balance”
This has taken me completely by surprise.
And now I’m out here in this city without my cat or my job; the door is blown wide open.
Edit: It was 2 days off, first day spent at the vet running tests and seeing what needed to be done to save him. By the next morning he was worse and I made the decision to put him down. Grieved that day then back to work the next.
