Fired with out being told

I live in nc with my wife and there was a problem where she couldn’t work night shift at a hotel any more so they told her they would move her to part time and then let her cover where they needed her but have never told her to come in and now that she’s got a new job with the same company she isn’t in the system. Is it possible to be fired with out them telling you they fired you? I know they don’t have to give a reason but at least a hey look for another job would be appreciated
