I am a game dev, I do the coding bit. While I do independently make hobbist level games for many years, I have only about 1 year of professional level game making. I worked for a studio that never trained me more than the very basics at the 1st month, despite me asking for more training time and time again.
They ended up firing me for “not evolving” as they expected me to (how if you aren't providing training? And I was basically a bug fixer, never had any opportunity to do something complex). They expected me to work full time and study independently on my free time, as if I didn't have a life outside of work…
Plus, they didn't even pay me enough for me to be able to live by myself, I had to go back to my parents' house because I couldn't pay all the bills required to WFH on my own…
Well, now I'm about 6 months in unemployment, and I've been searching high and low for junior/entry level jobs. I even took some free lance works to make ends meet, but they paid very little and are unreliable… All the job offerings I see are for mid-senior level, NONE for junior level. I end up applying anyway, but either I get ghosted or they tell me that they are looking for people with more experience.
How do they plan on having mid-senior level people if they don't train the junior level employees?
I'm actually thinking of just giving up on this career, and idk… working for a pet shop or plant nursery as I like tending to plants and caring for animals… It does seems like I wasted a good chunk of my life on this game dev thing, because as much as I love it, it just isn't feasible…
