For context, I was hired about 3 months ago and they did no paperwork during onboarding. No background check, no drug testing, no medical testing (necessary for working with elderly). I could have put that my name is Barack Obama, born in 1890, and they would have accepted it with no questions.
So this employer has been holding an hour out of each of my 12+ hour shifts and claimed it was for two 15 minute breaks and one 30 minute lunch. In the state of GA, as far as I’m aware, it’s illegal to withhold funds for breaks given that are under 20 minutes. I also do not clock out for my lunches because there are only 2 people overnight and you have to be available at all times, due to the nature of the job. In addition, I was also promised a $1k bonus after 60 days. There were no documents to sign and it was all verbal. No stipulations were ever given for that bonus. It is still posted on the hiring website though.
I’ve been in contact with the managers and they are mostly unresponsive. I did threaten them with going to the department of labor and with reporting them to state authorities, regarding the abuse and illegal nonsense that occurred while I worked there. There is a lot of neglect and immoral activity that’s gone on. The owner of the facility did call me and I will have a conversation with them tomorrow.
A few questions:
With all this said, am I fine to have threatened what I threatened? I will go through with it, but can anything come back and bite me with me having done so?
What should I be saying/threatening on the phone to the owner to get this resolved in an easier, less stressful manner?
What are the proper steps here to take, in case tomorrow’s call doesn’t resolve things?
Thank you in advance.
