Gave my notice and boss didn’t believe me

Obligatory this was posted from mobile, don’t hate on my grammar. A few months ago, I gave my boss my notice. He was working from home that day, and even though I would have much rather done it in person, I wanted him to have as much notice as possible. The next day, he wouldn’t even look at me. At about 3pm, he comes into my office and demands to know what my offer from my new job was. I didn’t really care anymore, so I told him. At this point, he demands to see the offer letter to see if I am telling him the truth. Again, not caring, I showed him the letter and watched the smug expression leave his face.

He immediately said “Shit”, handed me back my phone, and walked out.

I later learned from my supervisor buddy that the boss then went up to him and told him there was no way they could counter the offer. My buddy told him “I know. And if you did, I’d want the same thing”. My boss then goes on to say that even if they were to counter, it would be short lived as they would find someone to replace me immediately, then fire me.

When speaking with my boss later, I cheekily asked if they would counter. It was at this point he told me that the plant manager was the one that didn’t believe my offer was legitimate and wanted to investigate.

The rest of my notice was spent dodging passive aggressive comments, and some not so passive. I was told that being in a position of power and decision making isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. I was also told “I’ve done that before, you’re going to hate it. You’ll be overworked and underpaid”. The best one was when I was told, “you could have made more money here. You just suck at negotiating”. I then asked, “Would you have paid as much as this offer”? When told no, I responded with “then why are we even having this conversation”? That shut him up pretty quick.

Now a few months later, I’ve been working in my new field, making 25% more money, much less stress, and just an all around better work environment. Don’t let these toxic bosses bully you. Know your worth and find a boss who sees it too. Good luck out there, guys.
