“Go above and beyond”

So for most of my life my father told me that if I worked hard and went above and beyond at a company and stayed at that company for 20 years I would be rewarded. Something that I have found to be absolute horseshit. I used to work for a security company back when I was much younger. And this Allied Universal which is the biggest security company. And I was under the impression that if I worked hard I would be rewarded so I was the hardest working motherfucker there. One thing I excelled at was training people. I churned out GREAT security officers. I worked hard in training them, made sure that they were the best guys they could possibly be and I shoved them out into the world.

So I worked at this company for a few years doing my best, and then a position opened up in our dispatch center. It was much higher pay, steady hours, and I wanted this job. So I put in for it figuring I would at least get an interview.

The next day I get cornered by my manager And she tells me that I am too valuable in my current position to be moved up.

That's when I stopped being excellent at my job. That's when I stopped doing more than the absolute bare minimum. That's when I stopped doing more than I was paid to do. Because in this day and age, if you are great at your job then they don't want to fucking move you.

And strangely enough a year later another position opened up in dispatch, And I applied for it, only this time I wasn't so valuable in my position anymore so I got the job.

In this day and age, never do more than you are paid to do. When I have to pass something on to my relief, I make sure that they are clocked in and getting paid before I tell them anything work related.

I used to pick up shifts like a mother fucker. Now? When my boss calls, they better leave a detailed message of what they want, because I base whether or not I call them back on that message.

If they call saying hey do you want to cover this shift on this day, and I'm interested in that shift on that day, I will call them back. If they simply leave a message of “call me” or no message at all, they don't get a call back.

Alright I'm done ranting.
