I am beyond irritated… The day before my birthday I think I had my first migraine ever. I really couldnt go to work so I called out. My next shift, I saw one of managers. He asked me if I have a moment to talk about the new group thats in house ( I work in hospitality and we host social and corporate events). I said sure and followed him to an empty room where a different manager was already sitting and waiting.
I was caught really off guard. He had me sit down and then he then pulled out a folder and said “The reason we are here today is because you called out on Friday and you don't have sick hours.” He went on and on about how its the company policy etc. And to be honest he wasn't even clear if it was a verbal warning or a write up. He just kept referring to it as this instance would be documented. He even printed out the policy in our handbook and gave it to me.
I pretty much shut down and he gave me a chance to talk but i just asked where do I sign and I left. I read the handbook page he printed out and it said nothing about calling out when you dont have sick hours.
I had no idea this kind of policy exists, and apparently its quite common in my state (california). I feel so disgusted, these companies prefer us to come in sick? And work? I serve food…
