A boss at an old job told me he had to shut down my entire department because it was losing money. He said he wouldn't just fire me though, he didn't want to leave me high and dry without a job, so he'd wait to shut down the department until I found another job.
This was my first proper job and the anti-work penny hadn't dropped yet, so like a sucker, I believed him. I found a new job, quit that job, then a couple of months later I happened to drive past and see that my old department was still operating.
I spoke to a former colleague, and he told me that as soon as I left the boss hired a minimum wage worker.
Turns out the boss wanted me gone since I was expensive, but he couldn't fire me since he'd have to pay me severance, so he took advantage of my gullibility and tricked me into quitting. As soon as I left, he hired a minimum wage worker.
Joke's on him though, the former colleague told me that the new guy couldn't manage my workload so the boss had to hire a second minimum wage worker. He tried to save money by swapping me with a cheaper employee, but he ended up spending more money since he had to hire two of them.
I hope that prick learned his lesson.
