Had to call in this morning….

I am new-ish at my job, on day 62 of my 90 day probation period. My kid got sick on the school bus this morning headed to school and I had to go pick him up. I’m having trouble finding someone to come watch my sick kid (obviously). Fridays are our busiest days. My boss’s boss says to try not to take off Fridays. So I cringed and called my boss. Her response? “It’s not a problem. If you come in late, come on in. If you need the day, take the day. Take care of your baby. Breathe, you sound stressed.” 🤯 I’m in my 30s and I’ve NEVER worked for or with people so great. They’ve been amazing since day one. I’m a single mom of two and my son is autistic. I’m in my 30s and I’ve NEVER worked for or with people so great. They’ve been amazing since day one. I’m a single mom of two and my son is autistic. He rides a special bus to a special school. During the interview I asked my now-boss if I could take my lunch break later in the day to get him off the bus and into the house and settled in with a sitter. She said “Absolutely, you get an hour to do what you please.” What if I’m working alone? “Close the store and put a note on the door. Your kids come first.”

THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE. I’ve been riddled with depression and caregiver burnout for years. I’ve never been able to work somewhere long due to the employers being unable or unwilling to accommodate. I understand not every job can accommodate such needs, and I don’t feel entitled to the accommodations. I simply move on. As a result my résumé kind of sucks. But she took a chance on me, and I’m now THRIVING. Because she and my coworkers are so great, I show up happy to be there, go above and beyond. I am recognized for my efforts. Thanked and praised when earned, politely coached when a mistake is made, backed up when customers are rude.

She is our area manager under a regional manager, and her area is consistently ranked #1 within the company in revenue and production. This is why! Her people are happy to work for her.

I’ve never been happier with a job. I wish all bosses, managers, etc would see that treating people with kindness and respect and giving grace will result in a much happier work environment.
