Hello fellow redditors. Who or where do employers call or search for confirmation of a high school diploma or G.E.D?

I have been in management positions in the past for several places, some corporate, some not. Where would this data be stored? Wherever I have worked in the past we just assumed the person wasn't lying about these trivial things. Located in the southern United States if it makes a difference.
