I’m doing a 1 month trial period for a US company remotely, though they are training me. Currently I have just been moving files around, but they said I will be planning a large event in France.
They expect me to relocate to France for a year if I am accepted as an unpaid intern, and work 40 hours per week in exchange for a paid for apartment and food. This has a couple problems:
They wrote that in exchange for my work, I would get room and board in Bordeaux for 1 year, however they said it’s unlikely I can get a work-visa or long-stay-visa, so they expect that I live there anyways?? I don’t want to get deported, but I would like to leave the USA.
I calculated that food and rent for a single individual is around $1300 monthly, but I have my phone bill, train tickets etc I still need to cover myself.
It’s a US company so I believe I’m under US labor laws, but 40 hours per week for planning and marketing a large event, largely by myself, is worth more than $1300 / month.
The experience of planning such an event would definitely get me a high paying job elsewhere, and since I am a US citizen it is unlikely that I could get an apartment by myself in France. I am hesitant to turn down the opportunity for these reasons. I feel that if I’m working 40 hrs per week plus another job under the table, I will not even have time to explore France
