Follow up, what can you afford in rent according to those online calculators? For me, I can reasonably afford $1200 a month in my area. My actual rent is $1355. I just barely qualify for an admittedly good sized apartment in a relatively nice/safe area. Next year, when I need to renew, there's a good chance I may not be able to “just get by” and be forced to move to a much smaller, significantly less “nice” area. So what about you?
