“New job?
Going to make it short. From Texas, grad’d from Uni 12/2022. For a job offer finally after 9-months of looking, hired through a 3rd party staffing agency to work for a tech start up here in Dallas, where I reside. Getting $17.50/hr. It’s a classic 9a.-5p. gig, running an office/admin assistant/office manager, admin gig overall.
Am I being screwed with this going through a 3rd party staffing company, getting $17.50? I’m W2’d through the staffing company, not 1099, though they call me a contractor at my office assignment.
They said it’s technically Temp Labour but that I “may” be “converted over” to working for the company long-term, aware of potential job security issues, the temp agency told me that it’s a “non-ending” contract (no end-date), I just worry that I’m being screwed over and will be eventually fired after they finish using me for “what they need”, talking to another lady here she told me it’s a very cut-throat, un-empathetic company.
I am not worried ab benefits as I am on parent’s insurance.”

Am I being screwed doing this? How much am I losing hourly? I previously had just left a job as a personnel manager for a pool staffing company that staffed pool monitors, lifeguards, etc .., I was there throughout college every summer as well as this summer, so I have experience similar to this job but not exactly the same, but definitely similar, my boss at the time let me list it as just 4-straight-years. I struggled for 9mo to get a gig out of Uni that relates more corporate until I nailed this.
I noticed that this company hires a shit ton of us “contractors” (company is a tech start-up/merger of multiple start-ups) and that they’re trying to take advantage of me in ways I didn’t think.
My position is office admin, which I do fine, stocking everything, badging new employees, the occasional admin tasks etc … but apparently it may involve doing interviews and stuff for new candidates and other non-job related duties being assigned.
For example, in the interview, they weren’t really direct with regards to how I would be paid in everything, I went into the interview, thinking I was just going to be hired directly by the company, and obviously temple labour is insecure, so I have been talking to like the different managers over me, and they really haven’t give me a direct answer as to if they want to hire me onto the company, and they just say “let’s see”, and that I need to “prove myself”, and seeing other stories, similar to mine, with regards to these employment avenues.
I’ve since become lazy and “meh”, doing the minimum and not trying to stand out, I feel misled. I have been doing my work, but not going out of my way to ask for work; I am also Jewish and they want me to work on the day of rest, which is a big no-no in Judaism, that day, being Saturday, and I am sure as hell not showing up to work event on a weekend that is not paid. All of the managers just say “prove yourself” … while underpaying me the market rate.
Another sleazy thing that they are trying to do is help me attend 8 am work meetings without paying me, until I said something.
My schedule is 9-5, they wanted to give me 8-5 on these meeting days and just give me an unpaid hour lunch I told them I will do 8-4, with which they reluctantly agreed, they said they will “evaluate” me in the next “quarter” to see if I should be brought on or not but I feel like they are just stringing me along until some work projects are done and then just fire me, or until they try to hire someone with more experience.
Any advice for a grad navigating this new corporate experience? Am I being screwed? Do I put effort in for another job? Etc … I feel like I am just being taken advantage of for the next month or two until they let me go … am anxious on what to do as I do not anticipate them bringing me on to the payroll, since they have so many contractors they hire and let go frequently .. which I found out after being hired. I am nervous
