I recently got a different job with the govt that provides a vehicle and it’s been immense help. I used to rack up 80 miles a day on my vehicle before + $6/day in tolls to get to and from my office. You could say I coulda moved closer but I bought my house in a nice suburb that is safe (which was the main priority) back in 2021 when prices and interest rates were OK. I’m probably never gonna move because anything comparable to my house would be a 300% increase in mortgage payment if I bought today.
Anyway, most of my friends commute from this suburb or others to the city and have similar 45-60min (35-50 miles) each way commutes, all on the freeway but traffic builds up in rush hour. Few outliers drive 1-1.5hrs each way.
I realized that before this job, I was spending ~$20/day in gas and tolls to get to work, five days a week. That excludes maintenance and insurance costs.
What’s your limit? Do you factor commute time and costs into your pay?
