Ill try to make this post as short as possible.
Im 21, work a warehouse job. First true full time job.
Been there for a little over a year and it’s been going great or i thought until today.
September 2022, i applied for the job and the starting pay was 17.50$, i asked for 18.50$ and they accepted. I was a quick learner and still am, high precision for orders, low mistake count, and made sure the orders were properly built and the customer had what he ordered. I get told regularly that im good and they appreciate me, i also think that. Most people we got were not that good and eventually got fired.
February 2023, the base pay was raised to $20.00 for everyone applying for that role. Naively, i said to myself great, i just got a bump in pay but i didn’t think to ask for $21 since i had asked for 1$ over the base.
Anyway, move a few months later and i apply for some sort of team leader for the warehouse, i fit the role well and wanted to learn something new and get new responsibilities. I get a $2 bonus so it puts me at $22.
Today, one of my coworkers who is a warehouse clerk, (position i was before) said they are currently making $23.50 and hour. I’m mad right now and feel backstabbed. My position is higher than theirs ( not that much) but still higher, they got hired not even 5 months ago, they know less about the job, and their base pay is over 3$ mine! And i got more shit to deal with! They would make over 25$/h if they would be in my position.
I consider myself a better worker than them, i know more and i have more responsibilities. So im asking, how do you determine your worth? Clearly the management team took advantage of me being young and not experienced enough to know my worth. My coworker is nearly a decade older than me and they know their worth, asked and they got it. Fuck, i liked that company but i feel betrayed. I will be talking to my boss monday morning about my pay. They will probably raise it but it sucks i have to threaten them.
