I’m based in Atlanta and my company hired me on as a remote employee. I’ve been a WFH employee for about 5 years over two previous companies. With this new company however they announced a mandatory return to office for half the week (M,W, every other Friday) 3 weeks after I started. I felt like this was a rug pull and if I had known this I would have accepted another offer that has now passed.
The return to office rule states that all employees within a 20 mile radius must come in to the downtown office. As you can imagine commuting to downtown Atlanta in rush hour is hell. I live 14 miles from the office and it takes about an hour and a half to get there. Screw that. Of course all the C suite and manager level employees live outside the radius. Most are in FL or NY.
Now I’m trying to figure out how to make it appear I’ve moved outside the radius. I have no family or close enough friends here in GA whose address I can use. Can I say I’ve moved to a new apartment and use a P.O. Box? My boss will probably smell bullshit but who cares. If they mail me equipment and packages will that be an issue? I’m looking for new work but the job market is tough, I was lucky to find this job but I just can’t stomach this pointless commute. Even more infuriating is the office is like 90% empty. I drive 90 minutes each way to sit at a desk just like mine at home and interact with zero people. I have to make it seem I live outside the radius without moving. Any ideas?
