Humble Brag About My Old Boss and Mini-Rant About My Current

Today was my last day at my job and I wanted to share how amazing my boss was. Good employers are out there and I think we could all use a little hope. I worked for a local swim school for 4 months to make a little extra cash outside of my regular job. When I was hired my starting pay was $17 hour, which in my opinion was very generous. By the time I left my pay was $21 an hour. He gave me a raise along with three other people because we chose to pick up additional hours. When the pool heater broke my boss gave us all swimming jackets, a $75 bonus for teaching as well as a $10 gift card for everyday that we taught.

My experiences with my old boss blew my mind. I’ve been working for a nationwide BASP program for the last two years. It has been hell! I have more negative stories than positive at this point and most involve the management. I had to demand a raise from $12/hr to $13/hr after working there for a year and a half after finding new hires were being offered $13! On two separate occasions upper management was training me for a promotion just to decide to go with an outside hire. I ended up getting the promotion and no I did not get a raise. I also ended up doing a hell of a lot more than my job description required. I essentially took on the new position along with my bosses position because she was completely incompetent. A very nice woman but she was not cut out for the job. It did not dawn on me how messed up this company is until I sat here to type this out.

Simply put my old boss treated us like humans and not disposable objects. Hopefully this little story can inspire a few people to think about how employees are treated on a mass scale and that we don’t have to accept these conditions. I am lucky to have had the boss I had however an individual shouldn’t have to rely on luck to work for a good company.
