I am being verbally abused by a customer and management will not do anything about it.

I work for a large automotive company. I am the only female at my location. I have been in this industry for many years. First as a service writer then an automotive technician and now I am in sales. We have a customer who is known for being unpleasant. Every single time I’ve felt with him, the call has ended with him cursing and calling me names. This has progressively gotten worse. Yesterday was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I told him he was being very rude and put him on hold. Management was not happy that I stuck up for myself. I told them I couldn’t believe they were allowing this customer to treat me this way. They told me to try not to answer the phone when he calls. How the hell am I supposed to do that?! I am now nervous when the phone rings.…
