I (29F) started working for an HVAC company three weeks ago as an assistant. I have no experience in the area, but I was desperate for any type of job since I’ve been unemployed for most of my 20s.
The owner is a pretty eccentric guy. He thinks he’s some sort of hot shot, lives in an expensive house and drives fancy cars. He presents his company as one of the biggest in the area but it’s honestly just a mom and pop operation with a few technicians, and I get the impression that he spends more time dealing with his lifestyle than focusing on the moneymaking part. We are out of clients right now and he’d rather ask about my personal life or talk about his than train me or tell me how to read a floor plan, for example, despite me asking him repeatedly to clue me in. I end up spending most of the day sitting around, and I guess I can’t complain, but I just wonder for how long this will be sustainable, especially for him. (Unless he’s just paying for the illusion of having a secretary as a power trip).
I’m starting to feel like I should start studying mechanical engineering and marketing on my own and be more proactive, but I don’t think it’s worth it for how little I’m paid/how long I spend commuting.
I imagine you’ll tell me to just get a better job but for personal reasons this is pretty much my only option right now (no car/no degree). What would you do in my position? I want to take advantage of this situation.
