I know why I don't like reference checks. When I was applying for a post-degree job with Centinela Valley Union High School District (Lawndale, CA), the only standalone high school district in the South Bay, I get passed over the Behavior Management Aide (now Paraeducator) job because of the “reference check”. They also tell me that ALL school districts (not just my desired school districts) perform reference checks on candidates.
My reason for failing the reference checks was because:
- I used my educators as professional references, even though “professional references must be people from work”.
- P.F. Chang's did not want to speak with the school district.
- The kitchen manager at Chili's was not able to be reached on his personal mobile number.
- No one at Smashburger knew about my job search in advance.
This was where I knew that school districts perform reference checks on candidates.
