I feel like a lot of entry level positions are designed to trap you there.

I work in a Helpdesk role. Even though my responsibilities extend way beyond that. I’m still a “Helpdesk Technician.” I have nearly four years of experience. I make $20/hr. The rule of thumb is that if you want to move out of a Helpdesk role and more into like a system administrator role then you need to get certifications. And not just one. Multiple. A single certification runs about $400. And that’s just to take the test. If you fail the test you have to pay again. How am I supposed to move up and spend money for these certification tests when I can barely afford rent???
