I (18M) had been working as an electrical trainee for almost 6 months. My boss- let’s call him Dennis, as I don’t use peoples’ real names on Reddit, seemed to be a cool dude, me and him always cracked jokes whenever we saw each other, and seemed to get along.
Almost three weeks ago, three hours after work, I was on my way to a concert, when Dennis called me. Here’s what he said:
Him: “Hey, sorry for calling so late, I just got home from a job with no cell service,”
Me: “It’s all good. What’s up?”
Him: “Me and Craig (vice president) have been talking. We’re going to have to lay you off man, have a good night,”
Me: “Okay,”
The following day, a bunch of my ex coworkers, including one of my supervisors, texted me saying that they heard I got laid off and they were gonna miss me. I asked my ex supervisor if he knew why I was laid off. He said it was due to four reasons, all of which are absurd.
1: I took “too many bathroom breaks,”. I told everyone that I had IBS and IBD, even when I was hired, I told Craig that. They seemed to understand.
2: I was “slow at work”. The last time I rushed at work, I got zapped. I was proceeding with caution and using my proper tools.
3: I “took too many breaks”. the company breaks state labor law saying lunch and rest breaks may not be combined- I always took them separately so I could grab an energy drink or a bag of chips, and not be sluggish throughout the day.
4: I had “bad behavior”. My first ever supervisor sent me home with no warning on my third week ever working there because I cursed after smashing my hand by accident. I laughed and told him “this isn’t middle school, get used to construction,”. I also told him to shut up because he kept trying to preach his religion to me and I told him repeatedly to stop.
Honorable mention- Two weeks before my layoff, Dennis told me to take the week off, and when I asked if it was temporary, he said it was.
Here’s my rant. Feel free to tell me your thoughts.
