I got fired from a big non-profit for reporting my line manager’s misconduct and bullying behaviors

Just got locked out from my email and suddenly an email to my private address from my former manager’s manager – termination of contract. My former line manager had a serious problem with micromanaging – texts/calls after hours and crazy amount of check-in meetings. At first, I tried to set the boundaries diplomatically, but he didn’t listen. Still called me via MS teams while I was having another meeting, just to teach me “how to use Word via Teams”. He’s been reported to the HR once by another senior staff who’s being working there for 10 years, but nothing has changed. He wanted to control my every step. In the onboarding process, he created the illusion that “he” was the only support for everything. Like everything – from administration tasks, finance, to everything else.

He needs to be in the loop at all times.

Finally, I was sent to another country for business trip for two weeks, and he arranged to take me to the beach on a weekend. Two days after arrival, I found out that I was supposed to “spend a night” near the beach area with him. Same hotel. I felt really uncomfortable and told the senior colleague, and he told me that this behavior is extremely inappropriate and told me to report it.

In addition, he put me into a really bad hotel with very thin walls (loud noises), sewage smell, and no working wifi. I couldn’t sleep for a whole week, and finally when I told him, he told me that he’s too busy to take care of my accommodation problem (this is after I told him that I didn’t want to go to the beach with him).

Through another colleague, I got on a call with the international HR, and the HR agreed to have a call with him first. After the call with HR, his attitude changed completely – he didn’t want to look me in the eyes, barely responded to my questions – worst of all, he had a meeting go on for 15-20 minutes in his native tongue with the others, knowing that I don’t speak the language. He even purposely had camera on him and the others in the zoom call, while my presence was completely hidden from the camera.

I wrote to him to confront his behavior again, but he didn’t want to acknowledge it. I told him that I don’t agree with he way he attempted to ostracize me, but he continued to do so in every other meeting.

Anyway, I wrote again to the HR requested to talk again, wrote to his manager to plead with her regarding my former line manager’s behavior. At this point, I was completely isolated, he didn’t want to communicate with me at all, not even to help with the work-related questions. Then I got fired. LOL

TL;DR: non-profit organization is just as bad as private corporations. Companies shelter bullies, and fuck work.
