Quick background to this, the HR at my company is also the legal team, so it’s a bunch of lawyers trying to be HR specialists (you can imagine how those two don’t mix).
Anyways, my company is 3 days in the office (2 days when I first joined, then they increased a week after I joined). I live 77 miles away from work, and it takes me 2 hrs to get to the office by car (SoCal traffic). I’ve been tactical here where I try to schedule off site meetings closer to where I live, which counts as going into the office. I always explain to an HR associate when I do this, giving them the name of the person I’m meeting, their company, and business purpose. The good thing is my job is very client facing, so the meetings I have are legit.
Whelp, the VP of HR/legal called me in yesterday, and immediately started yelling at me because I wasn’t doing 3 days in the office. I explained that I was doing meetings offsite, and the company policy says that it counts as a day in the office. She just kept yelling, and really not saying anything else other than, “YOUR EMPLOYMENT IS BASED ON 3 DAYS IN THE OFFICE!”
Really one of the only meetings with an HR person where I had to try to calm the HR person down. Tried to negotiate saying I am looking for a house closer to the office, but moving isn’t instantaneous.
Not sure how to deal with that outburst. It’s crazy to have an HR person yell at an employee, especially the head of HR. I can’t report being yelled at to anyone else either.
How should I deal with this? I’m at the point where I don’t care, and will just keep scheduling meetings offsite until they fire me.
