I don't like complaining about working weekends cause I usually get the same droll 'ohhh thats work settle down, we all have to do it!'. but I guess I just needed to vent somewhere!
Ever since Covid hit us, my hours got changed. For reference I'm a security guard so I know weird work hours well, but I am tired, bored, and very lonely.
I went from no weekend work, to being in every single Sat and Sun, holidays inclusive, with the exception of about 3 months of Mon-Fri work this year due to a temporary contract becoming available. which was lovely! Got to enjoy mornings, see friends I have not seen since 2019/early 2020, attend some much missed out on events. All that lovely stuff
But I am so sick of seeing virtually no friends or family. Maybe 3 friends are off max in the week but they're usually doing errands and odd house jobs or tending to chores. Nothing happens Wednesdays or Thursdays. No one is usually off mid week, not many events happen (the one which do aren't fun to attend alone).
It's getting embarrassing and depressing to turn down and miss out on plan after plan after plan. Some people gave up asking about a year ago. No fresh Christmas dinner with parents most years unless they save me a plate to microwave the next day at work, no parties unless I'm only there for 45 minutes in my work clothes then heading home, no car meets, no random time away with family and little spontaneous trips with friends at weekends due to getting home at 7pm and needing to be in bed by 10pm on the weekends. My hours are 7a-7p Sat and Sun, and 5p-7a Mon and Tues.
The company is a small one (think 20 people at most in employment incl. office staff) which means a limited amount of sites to work at, and little to no switch rounds with others as everyone here is generally happy with their sites and hours. So no real flexibility, but I really wish the boss would do a rotation of a weekend off every few months for those who want it, or 4 on 4 off deal.
I'm trying to change jobs as my work leaves me plenty of time to search the ads, but all of them around here are retail, which is not a good fit for me due to health problems, construction which I dont have the certs for, high level hospital work, or jobs which would drop my salary significantly which is not too great in the cost of living crisis.
I wish I could do my job remotely, spend more time with people, and spend time with my cats more than I do now.
