Driving a semi truck. Very surprising as most of the industry has you working up to 14 hours/day and up to 6 or 7 days/wk and a lot of jobs have you away from your family for weeks or even months at a time.
My first job in trucking was very similar to this. However, seeing most of the country and being places I never thought I'd get to go or never even thought about going was an amazing experience. Furthermore, most people don't think about this, but there is no commute to/from work, you don't need to have a place to live at all outside of the truck and staying with friends or family on your home time. A storage unit will keep all of your things safe. No rent, no utilities, free showers from fueling the truck which you do for free if you're a company driver, and almost all you do is just drive.
I'm not saying it is for everybody, but its very freeing. A bot of time management, and you can usually work 12 on, 12 off and even have a pretty well set sleep schedule. I absolutely loved it. I love driving though, tbf.
Now, I have a new job. Home every day, working overnight but only 6-8 hours/day usually and making around 70k/yr minimum. I usually will pick up extra work, too and i will make even more. Currently on track to make about 100k+ this year and only working 40 hours/wk.
Again, not saying it's for everybody, but if you enjoy driving, I highly recommend trying it out.
Make sure you look good and hard at your options, though. Some companies are truly terrible (swift amd western express mainly). However, I have heard very good things about some other companies (hirschbach) and there are good stories from companies that are generally perceived as bad. Hirschbach will get you your cdl for free, too, as long as you work for them for a certain amount of time.
I don't recommend owner/operator jobs until you have at least 3 or 4 years of xp. Don't fall for any of those scams.
I love driving. I love driving the semi. I actually enjoy going to work now. I hope this helps someone start loving their life.
Ik I absolutely hated my life before I started driving a semi truck. I literally thought I would have to drive my car fast into something very hard as my only option out of this. Now, there's no way I'd ever even consider it.
I've found my one thing. And I am loving life and actually enjoying working now.
P.s. one of the only jobs where the government actually restricts your hours and does their jobs somewhat. You can't work more than 14 hours/day (11 hours of driving) and you can't work more than 70 hours in an 8 day period. Amazing.
I don't recommend p&d though. Mainly bc, while the working hours restriction is great for those of us who drive a lot and get paid by the mile, it is terrible for those who get paid by the hour bc you don't get overtime at all ever and they can work you 14 hours/day up to your 70 hour limit, usually within 5 days. However, you will normally work during the day and, based on what I've heard, around 10-12 hours/day, 5 days/wk.
