I'm in a very awkward position where I was going to leave my current job on a Friday to move to a job across the country, away from my family, but my dad unexpectedly passed away the week I was quitting. I politely asked the job I moving across the country for to delay my start date, explained the situation I was in, but they straight up refused to move my start date a single day. I made the hard decision to leave that job, and my current job allowed me to rescind my job resignation. I wanted to stay home because I was not quite in the greatest mental state to move. And because I wanted to make sure my mom and my little sister are gonna be fed and sheltered. My dad was the significant breadwinner, so I'm helping my mom apply for SS benefits, SNAP, etc.
Now, [sigh], not even a week since my dad died, my current job is asking me “what's your plan now? Are you still going to leave?” I STUPIDLY said “Yes I still plan to move to X city, but not sure when that will happen” and then I more STUPIDLY followed up with “Maybe in 6-9 months.” Fellas, I should've shut my trap and lied and said “Nope I'm not leaving anymore.” Now my job is going to post my position next month, and then want me to train this new person and on May 1st, I need to pack my things and get my ass out. Doesn't matter if I find a job or not. They don't care.
Moral of the story, no matter how nice your Manager (And I truly mean nice, this manager was probably the best Manager I've ever had in my life, before this situation unfolded, I felt like I could trust her), DO NOT TELL THEM ANYTHING ABOUT POTENTIALLY LEAVING. YOU DON'T OWE THEM ANYTHING.
