I just moved from a big city of 1 million people (maybe not big to some but here that’s the most populated city) to my home town of 160 thousand people.
The difference in wages for the same kind of jobs is insane, when looking for work through in the city I would regularly see call centre jobs offering £24k for average positions, in my home town it’s more like £20k.
Hourly wages for retail in the city seemed to be at minimum £11 an hour lowest I’ve seen here was £10 and the average only seems to be £10.42. This is my current rate, it’s going up in October to almost £11 but still not even meeting that standard.
I’ve seen jobs advertised in this town that require bachelors degrees and they only offer £20k and that just sounds insulting to me.
I just don’t get how in a smaller town the pay can be much lower but the cost is almost exactly the same as the same as the city these days.
I’m flat hunting right now so I can move back out of my mothers house and there is an astonishingly low number of flats to rent here and it shocks that a town with a population a fraction of the size of city can have rent prices pretty much on par with it. Is there cheap flats? Yeah like 3 and they GO when they pop up.
I’m just sick to death of everything costing so much while we get paid so little. How can anyone make it by themselves these days ?.
