I need to find work that won’t leave me traumatized

I worked in Human Resources for a while. Hated hearing about people desperate to work but having to reject them for petty reasons. (A woman wore a skirt to an interview that made the manager uncomfortable. She was well qualified and would have crushed it. I had to explain to her the manager did not see her as a “cultural fit.” I worked in healthcare — as a tech and student nurse. I worked in a PICU…a lot of sad cases. I worked in healthcare — as a tech and student nurse. I worked in a PICU…a lot of sad cases. Suicides, NATs, you name it, I might’ve seen it. Kids dying on my shifts started to become a daily occurrence. I switched to labor and delivery and it was made very clear I was not welcome/didn’t fit in. My coworker lied about me calling a patient dumb and whiny. I quit after an injury (otherwise would have quit for cultural reasons).

I now work in crisis intervention. Most nights, the job is good. But the bad nights are memorable. A caller killed himself a couple of weeks ago and no amount of therapy will help me cope with that.

I just want to make enough to support myself and not incur any life-changing trauma. Why is that so difficult? I have a bachelor’s degree and a ton of varied experience. I hear of old classmates who make twice the money I do with less work experience and it boggles my mind a bit.
