I interviewed for a SOFA status job with Military AutoSource as a civilian in February 2024, got an offer in March, and arrived on August 1st.
On August 9th I'm told I'm being let go because they don't think I'm a “good fit.” I have barely had any training except memorizing a script and helping set up a display. I was still getting logins and credentials for training modules, etc.
My boss tells me that there are plenty of jobs on base and “you've got my number.” Total lip-service, he ghosted me and hasn't responded to any of my messages. There are NOT plenty of jobs on base, let alone ones that would let me remain in Japan with SOFA status. Now that I'm no longer employed by Military AutoSource, everything that allowed me to be on base is invalid, so I can't do anything to look for work in person.
When I contacted a higher up with MAS to ask about getting my pay for the week, paperwork related to being let go, and if there is anyone in HR to talk to. I get told there is no paperwork, I'm just fired, “I'm HR,” and a non-answer about payment for my work.
I still have zero information on how much and when I will be paid and I have 90 days from August 1st to find a new SOFA status job or return to the US because I was required to enter Japan on a tourist visa. I can't find a regular job without having to leave the country and re-enter at a later date on a work visa.
I'm hoping that I can find something here in Japan, but I am talking to my parents about staying at their house since I have no place of my own to return to in the US.
