Recently I went back to a job I’d left in 2022, where I was a kitchen lead. Store management had changed to one of the most obnoxious pricks I’ve ever had the misfortune to work with. It was a red flag when I was told, in all seriousness, I’d have to “give it my all” and “really put in some work” for my former rate of… $14.70 an hour lol
Should’ve backed out right there at the way he phrased that, but frankly I was desperate for work. I lasted two months. Two months of constant micromanaging nitpicky horrendous “leadership” from a store manager who missed his calling as a toilet seat cover. Needless to say, I’m out. Walked out on the job, and am starting my $16/hour dishwashing spot tomorrow.
I guess all this to say, pay attention to red flags in the interview. You should be scanning your employer just as much (if not more) than they are scanning you. In times this rough, when nobody feels in control of their position in life, I think at the very least we should remember that companies need competent workers more than ever, and competent workers vet their managers.
