Before anything, I have to clarify that I don't work for the app's company, but rather working with them as a client through an outsourcing company (Which means that I basically stole a job from someone's home country while probably not being paid enough for it).
So, in this job, I would say that there are two types of customers, the actual customers who order food, and the delivery work-OOPS I MEAN “Independent Contractors”.
The “home country” is a european country, but most people who work have Middle Eastern names, and some of them even use their immigration papers as a method of providing ID verification, which makes me believe that most “Independent Contractors” are immigrants, a group of people who are already vulnerable due to general bigotry from some customers.
Now, legally speaking, I am not HR, but I am responsible of checking why the “Contractors” can't go online to accept delivery, checking the status of their documents, and telling them why the company gave them the boot.
The funny thing is, depending on the market, some “Contractors” have to work with a “Partner” that is basically a company/person that works with the app's company to deal with some of the things that the app's company doesn't even want to deal with, for example, if someone is complaining about the amount of money they got from the “commission”, we basically just send them back to the “Partner”, which means some “Contractors” work “with” the company of a company!
Funny thing is, I hate the company, and I am a firm believer that their existence is the reason everyone is suffering financially when it comes to labor prices, but I just can't spend another 3 seasons to look for another job.
I hated the gig economy before the job, and I still hate it now, but the difference now is that I am an accomplice to the suffering of my fellow workers.
The structure is unfair at best, and unethical at worst, but what other options do I have?
