Back when I worked in Human Resources, company policy stated that before an employee could be fired by their boss approval must come from the Human Resources Director and a member of senior management. I thought this was a fair system because it stops out of control managers to make a rash decision based on emotion and fire someone with thinking. Also to protect the company from a wrongful discharge case connected to discrimination.
When the manager came to me in My role as Human Resources Director to get permission to fire their employee, I would ask him/her why they wanted to terminate the employee. The majority of the time they would use one of these old standbys:
- No one liked the employee (without giving any details)
- It is just not a good fit
This shows me that most employment terminations is based on personality mismatch not true work performance.
Have you ever been fired because of personality conflicts or fit? Tell us your story!
