I'm an assistant manager at a niche retail store. I've been with the company 9 years and in management for over 6 years at the same place. Since the pandemic, the company went public and my store went through 4 GMs while I stayed and powered through. Another department manager in my store who was planning on stepping down (he's been with the company less than one year), came to me to let me know that my DGM and GM were going to demote me and give him my job that he doesn't want. He wanted to let me know because they're forcing him into it and he doesn't feel comfortable taking my job.
The reason I'm being demoted is because the DGM isn't satisfied with our results. Even though we do better than the majority of stores in my district and we've lost foot traffic since summer began. We've been low on sales for the last 6 weeks but how could that possibly be my fault? I do everything they ask. I never call out, I'm always on time, I do my job and important parts of other manager's jobs (I'm not perfect but neither are they). I recruited a cashier/stocker 2 years ago and trained him from the bottom up, and now he's an assistant manager at another store. But I'm not good enough??
My GM just hired another manager to replace the one that told me about this. So they hired an outsider, new to the industry as a manager that I have to train, and they demote me??? I'm not good enough to be a manager at all anymore? Because this stupid company made so many bad decisions? Even the new guy, who had worked two shifts before I met him, told me he learned more from me in 15 minutes than he did in two days.
Yeah, I can't wait for this conversation. I'm pulling the gender card, the race card, and the disability card. I'm going to HR, I'm going to social media. I'm just gonna be their worst nightmare.
