I work as an event coordinator for a wedding photography/videography company. The owner asked me to do coordinating for a wedding 2.5 hours from my home. It would be a Friday rehearsal and then wedding day Saturday. They offered to put me in a hotel for Friday and Saturday night with it being 2.5 hours away from home.
Everything was going great until Friday morning I had a family emergency and I would be unable to make it to the rehearsal. My grandmas health took a quick decline and she ended up passing very early Saturday morning.
While it was very difficult I did still end up doing the 2.5 hour drive Saturday morning. I didn’t want to cancel the event on the bride because that’s not fair to her. I did drive home after the wedding as well because I just wanted to be home with my family.
We’ll come to payday I see the amount I was being paid was SIGNIFICANTLY less than what I normally make per event. The owner subtracted money because I missed the rehearsal (which i can understand) but then charge me $200 for the hotel room. With the price of gas and how far of a drive it was (I don’t get paid for mileage either) I barely made any money off this even while being gone for 12+ hours.
There was no discussion that they would be charging me for the hotel and I am very hurt.
I am technically an independent contractor as is everyone who works for them.
At this point I have nothing to say them especially since the owner and I are very friendly. I am suppose to work an event for them this weekend and I am just ignoring their calls at the moment.
