I’m up for a promotion but I’m skeptical

So this is a new job I’ve been at since late July, less than two months, and I’m already up for a promotion. I’m a dog handler at a boarding/grooming facility in Louisiana, so the pay isn’t great by any means. I’m the type of person that works my butt off at every job I’ve had, so I’m aware that I’m already a valuable employee here, but it’s also what makes me worry. I’m easy to take advantage of because I can’t help but care about my work and give it my all, and greedy employers have caught this in the past and used it to their advantage.

If I take the promotion, it comes with a two dollar raise, which I desperately need, but I’d also be named shift lead. The last time I took a shift lead position, my manager immediately started understaffing and I got left with the work of 3 people. When I said something about the drastically declining working conditions, the work environment became so abusive and toxic that I had to quit.

I need this raise and I love this job, but I do not trust my higher ups in the slightest simply because I am still too unfamiliar with them. If this job blows up because of this change in position, I’ll be devastated and don’t know what I’ll do for work instead.

The move to promote me so soon is also setting off alarms. Why do they want to do this so soon? It seems desperate, and desperate employers do some nasty stuff in my experience.
