They kept making gendered comments about how rare it is for women to make it in the field…. then said my resume of 5yrs dealership tech experience on top of 2 years in stores like theirs (firestone/NTB) being the most productive tech in the region week after week…. “looked clerical” like I did paperwork all day and “do you even know how to get under the hood?” “Can you do a brake job, struts?” “Do you have tools?” Along with Numerous technical questions meant to make me prove myself.
Mind you I’m also ASE certified in brakes, and suspension which was listed on my resume. And numerous advanced classes from garage gurus in addition to factory training and certifications from Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Chrysler.
I think they called me in for the novelty of it. To top it off, during the call that set up the interview he begged me to confirm I would show up for the interview (the next day) via text bc they “get a lot of no-shows”. Then they didn’t follow up after the interview. I asked 4 wks later “any updates”. “We went with someone else”.
I landed back in a high-line dealership and the manager didn’t reference gender nor question my abilities during the interview…
admittedly, I was only going to use any offer from place like pep boys as a stopgap. These guys were assholes.
