Would love some thoughts from others, especially if you are well versed with ADA accommodations. I’m having a hard time telling if my job is being difficult, or if I am perhaps being inflexible.
I have been at my job for a year, and it’s my first time working 5 days a week/40 hours (previously worked 3/12a) . I’ve had a hard time maintaining this due to my disability, leading to me calling out more frequently that I would like.
I worked with my provider and asked work to accommodate either three 12- hour shifts, or 4 -10 hours shifts so my schedule can be condensed and I’ll have an additional day off for rest.
For context- I work at an outpatient clinic that is open from 8am-9pm Monday-Thursday and then 8-5 on Fridays.
The schedule they suggested for me is 12 hours on Monday, Tuesday off, Wednesday 10 hours, Thursday 10 hours, and Friday 8 hours.
This suggestion frustrates me because frankly, who would want a schedule like this? Most people function well with a consistent schedule. I feel like this is setting me up to just be utterly exhausted and isn’t really any better than working 5 8 hours at that point.
I pushed back and asked why this was suggested instead of the 3-12s or 4-10s asked for in my accommodation letter. I was told the 3 12s only give me 36 hour instead of 40 that nurses at my job usually work. And for the 4-10s, they couldn’t really explain why that didn’t work for them. Just that in their opinion it didn’t give me adequate rest in between shifts?
I’m not really sure how to proceed with this. Our company defines full time as 35-40 hours. I’m trying to see if it says anything in my job description about having to work 40 hours but can’t find anything. Idk, I feel like they are being difficult just to be difficult. Which is frustrating because I’m trying to do us both a favor and reduce the frequency of my call outs.
If anyone has any thoughts I would appreciate it!
