Is it a good strategy to “be so good that they can’t/don’t want to replace you”?

I'm annoyed with my current job because of some really shitty work from home policies. I have two choices. I can either be demotivated and let it affect my work. Or I can spend the next few months working at a quality and speed they have never witnessed before, I'm sure. Obviously the latter is with the hope that knowing my value, I can negotiate much better about what I want. Does this strategy ever work? Has it worked for you? Edit: I see a lot of people saying not to do the latter. Just do the bare minimum. I see what you're saying, but if working too little and working too much leads nowhere, what should I do?
