So I work in hospitality (housekeeping at a hotel to be precise) and we’re open basically all year except in winter; we’re only open 3 days of the week. So that means we’re open for basically all holidays.
Today, a coworker asked one of our bosses about having New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day off. After their convo, I asked the same manager if it was far out enough to ask to have Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off (which it is). She told me I probably wouldn’t have those days off because of other people who have it off/scheduling. I also asked about thanksgiving as well, but I’m not really upset about having to work that day since I’m not fond of extended family.
My coworker (who originally brought up the topic) then proceeded to say that the people who don’t have kids should have to work those days. I’m 20, no kids, but basically still a kid myself. Holidays are important to my family and I really don’t want to miss Christmas. I get what she meant by what she said, but if I put my request for time off this early in the year when Christmas time isn’t even that busy for us, I feel like I should be able to have it off, kids or not. I get what she meant with what she said, but why should I have to forfeit my holiday time with family because some people have kids?
I’m going to talk to a higher up boss tomorrow about getting the days off, but idk if I’m being too dramatic about this or not.
