Is “job hopping” actually a “bad” thing or is it just an excuse to pay you less?

I am still somewhat early in my “career”, but when I get interviewed, I almost hear someone nitpick about my internships and how I have had to change companies a couple of times. I was working on call with a freelancer as my supervisor for a year, then went on to transition to office jobs, where they were either contractual or short term internships. I didn't think of leaving as a bad thing. Most of it was just to look for more experience to get better at my job or the contract just ends. The only time I want to say I truly “voluntarily” job hopped was this year when I was at my $20/hr. job as a contractor and was offered a fulltime job for $60,000 a year. Of course I accepted, I practically had 6 years of experience that started while I was still in college.

I wish employers judged you based on merit and skill rather than what's on your resume.
