Just Requested Work from Home

I just requested 40-60% work from home (wfh), and I’m just looking for any additional advise from the community. Background below. I started working for my local County Department of Transportation as a Right of Way Agent in February of this year (about 8 months ago). During the interview, I asked what they think about wfh, and they said they do it only for special circumstances, and basically never for an indefinite time (meaning only for a short while when the need arises). A couple weeks ago, my dad developed a problem that may leave him with altered vision, and unable to drive for the rest of his life. We live together, and our entire family consists of him and me.

This also means that he has a lot of Doctor’s appointments right now, and probably will for the next couple months.

Additionally, I just used the last of my sick time to drive him to the doctor.

Today, I went to my director (a very kind and understanding woman who’s about 45, about 10 years older than me) and told her the details of my dad’s condition. I also asked her if working from home a couple days a week from now on would be possible. She said they usually do not let people work from home forever, just for a short time, but she understands my need, and it may be possible. She is asking the department director who is currently working from home for 6 weeks due to an injury.

I just wanted to check in with the community to see if there is anything else I can do to get work from privileges. Naturally, I want to work from home 100% of the time, but this issue is serious, and a couple days a week wfh would really help out my dad. During this time, I could call doctors, run errands, and just take care of my dad.

I’m honestly considering quitting if they don’t hook me up with decent whf, and if my dad’s condition warrants it, as my dad is very important to me, and we could make it work financially. I haven’t told my boss or anyone at work this yet.

Thanks for reading, and for your support.
