Antiwork

Just started a legit job and I hate it.

I (23F) have been working while I was in school— tutoring, food service, and other similar part-time jobs offered by the school or through my church. I was guaranteed entry because I also went to church/school there, and it has always been good because I always knew my clients. Fastforward to now, I got my college degree and applied for a general labor position to help my resume a bit. Finding work with this degree has been hard in my state because there are no jobs for the work I intended to do. The job was through a staffing agency that guaranteed a short temp time into full-time hire. I applied, thinking they would give me some sort of better job description. I knew I would be working in a milk plant factory, but doing exactly what? The staffer, call him J, called me during a funeral so I didn't…

The staffer, call him J, called me during a funeral so I didn't answer. The next day I called and it took 3 tries to get ahold of him, two times the operator wjo was supposed to forward me to him, hung up and disconnected the call.

After I got ahold of J, he told me to apply quickly and give him an answer by the next day, latest at 9am. So I said ok later in the day and told him I could work as early as Monday. Took him 2 days to send me forms to fill and one day to set up an appointment also at 9am. I knew where the agency was in my town, but he said he'd be in another town during our meeting. I said ok, but please send the address. What does he do? Not send me the address until 30m before the meeting, in which it takes 30m to drive there even!

So we talked, I took my drug test, and then I asked, “So do you know what I'm doing?”

“No.”

This was on a Friday, btw. I start Monday.

So I stocked up on what they asked me to wear— casual wear with a t-shirt and jeans. I was told to park in 2 different locations on the same street. I was told to dial an extension for 2 of my supervisors when I got there. Neither showed up after dialing 3 times. Then I called HR who got a lady who didn't even know who I was and where to put me. I told her my job title and she then goes, “oh, they didnt tell you how cold it would be? Why didnt you bring a sweatshirt/hoodie?”

Because I was told to wear a t-shirt. 😉

I didnt get a key fob for facility entry, I didnt get my supervisor's numbers, and I still barely had a clue what I would be doing.

The day went ok after that, got trained on 50% of my job.

Next day, I couldnt go to work because I had no keyfob. I still could not contact the 2 supervisors nor could I contact HR. So I called the staffing agency who took 30 minutes to get ahold of the manager. After he told me about the other 50%, I asked about a key fob and he said he'd make it right away. Apparently right away means the next day (3rd day in) before he was about to leave for his vacation that lasted 2 weeks. Still hadnt met the 2nd supervisor…

Anyways, on the second day, I was trying to put in my time on the staffing agency's website when I realized— there was no timesheet option. Apparently, I hadnt been hired in. So I emailed them, no response until the next day from an automated messaging machine that then told me”congrats! You are now hired in.”

I couldnt put my time in for the first 2 days because of this.

On the job, the men are babying me. Im short, and this is a tall-person job. I can handle it with smaller portions, but one man in particular keeps making comments about my height and me being a lady, implying I shouldnt be here. Though I am thankful for the other men being nice, I prefer to be treated as a coworker than a child who cannot do anything.

Other coworkers on my job take 2+ random 15 min breaks (only limited 2). Some stand around and talk while we have a full truck trailer to load off. A lot of those conversations are about women. I don't mind them talking about how bad x's makeup is, or how y is acting badly. I do mind the sexual jokes. Im aware theyre not about me (im ugly af lol), but it still makes me a little uncomfortable that they chatter about it near me.

I dont mind the work. This is my 6th day in and I'm okay with most of the job now. I just need to gain muscle lol. But the people? The management who don't do anything from BOTH the work and staffing agency? I think I'm going to resign the day my temp status is up.
